  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) Virus

    Posted October 2, 2019

In response to parent concerns, we would like to inform you of Oxford Soccer League’s position on Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus.

Currently Oxford is not considered to be a high risk area according to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) and, at this time, town and school fields are open as normal. Accordingly, OSL’s practice schedule will continue as normal, unless and until we are advised otherwise by town or state officials.

If you do not wish your son/daughter to participate in soccer activities either after dusk or at any time, we certainly accept your decision. If you do decide to allow your son/daughter to continue to participate, we strongly recommend the following precautions to reduce the risk of infection by preventing mosquito bites:

Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.

Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin and/or clothing as directed in the packaging instructions.

The repellent/insecticide permethrin can be used on clothing to protect through several washes.

For more information about EEE, you may visit the State of Connecticut Mosquito Management Program’s FAQ at https://portal.ct.gov/Mosquito/Diseases/Eastern-Equine-Encephalitis-FAQs. If you have questions or concerns, please call your primary health care provider.
