Oxford Soccer League

OXFORD SOCCER LEAGUE PROGRAMS
Oxford Soccer League is pleased to offer programs at various levels for youth players from 4 to 19 years of age.

TRAVEL DIVISION

U10 - U15 (U16 - U19 in Spring Only) Travel Division

All travel teams practice together twice a week - usually Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays.  Optional travel level clinics are also offered on Friday nights.  These are topic specific and open to all travel players.  Games are played against other town travel programs affiliated with the South Central District of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association (CJSA) on weekends.  Travel teams may also participate in tournaments at additional cost.

Players at this level pay for their own uniform, and other needed equipment (balls, shin guards, cleats, etc.)   They are placed by age, on gender-specific teams that are coached by selected volunteers with soccer experience, who are supported by a professional trainer.

Please note - U10 Travel (which includes U9 players) is considered developmental.  No cuts are made at this level – all players who are registered make the team. The emphasis is on learning, progressing with fundamental skills/knowledge of the game, and an introduction to a more competitive level of soccer – all to help prepare players to move on to the higher travel levels.

IN-HOUSE (REC) DIVISION (FALL)

Note: Age groups and schedules mentioned below describe how the recreation program is typically organized. However, the Board of Directors reserves the right to make changes as necessary based on the number of registrations received and the availability of fields.

All players receive a shirt and ball and are assigned to a mixed-gender team led by a volunteer coach.   All players are required to wear shin guards.  Cleats are recommended, but not required.

U6 Boys & Girls - 4 and 5 years old as of December 31st following the Fall season

Players at this age practice once a week (usually Saturday mornings) starting in early September.  All sessions are run by a professional trainer, assisted by volunteer coaches.  The focus at this level is an introduction to soccer and the basic foundational skills necessary to progress within the sport – all done in a positive, fun, active, and safe environment.

U7 Boys & Girls - 6 years old as of December 31st following the Fall season

Players at this age practice once a week (usually Saturday mornings) starting in early September, with a professional trainer assisted by volunteer parent coaches.  They also practice and/or play a game once a week against other teams within the division.  The focus at this level is to help players progress in the areas of fundamental skill development and knowledge of the sport, and offer them the opportunity to employ those skills in a casually competitive environment.

U10 Boys & Girls - 7, 8 and 9 years old as of December 31st following the Fall season

Players at this age practice twice a week (once with their team and once with professional trainers assisted by their volunteer coaches.)  They also play a game once a week against other teams within the town’s U10 division.  The focus at this level is to help players refine their soccer skills and knowledge of the game.  There is a greater focus on team play and game tactics.  The ultimate goal is to develop these players’ skills, confidence, soccer knowledge, and overall readiness to move onto the travel level.

SUPER SOCCER SKILLS CLINIC SERIES (SPRING)

Note: Age groups and schedules mentioned below describe how the recreation program is typically organized. However, the Board of Directors reserves the right to make changes as necessary based on the number of registrations received and the availability of fields.

All players receive a program T-shirt at the end of the season. Players will train as a mixed-gender group led by a professional trainer with assistance from volunteer coaches and older youth players. All players are required to wear shin guards.  Cleats are recommended, but not required.

Training sessions are usually held on Saturday mornings starting in late April with players divided into age-appropriate groups. For younger and novice players, the focus at this level is an introduction to soccer and the basic foundational skills necessary to progress within the sport. For older players, additional, more complex skills may be covered as appropriate.

FUTSAL - INDOOR SOCCER (SPRING)

The futsal program typically runs from April until early June using the gymnasium at Quaker Farms School. Futsal is a fast-paced game played with a smaller, heavier ball than outdoor soccer and is designed to focus on ball-control skills and agility.

Players will be assigned to a mixed-gender, age-appropriate team led by a volunteer coach. Teams will generally have one practice
and one game per week. Age groups and schedules are determined by the Board of Directors based on the number of registrations received and the availability of gym time. Sessions, one hour each, are scheduled from 6 pm to 9 pm on weeknights. Wherever possible, younger players are scheduled in the earlier time slots.

All players receive a team shirt. All players are required to wear shin guards and non-marking flat-soled shoes (most regular
sneakers are fine).

All programs operate in a positive, fun, active, and safe environment.
